Die positiven Dinge:
Top Sound! Im Gegensatz zu einigen Rezensionen finde ich den Klang top!
3d Klang ist beeindruckend gut! War sehr überrascht das man nicht mehr das Gefühl hat einen Kopfhörer zu tragen, der Klang füllt den Raum. Seit dem letzten TvOS Update ist der Sound beim Filme schauen auf einem anderen Level!
Haptik ist toll, Verarbeitung auch, wobei sich das erst nach deutlich längerer Nutzung zeigen wird.
Die negativen Dinge:
Der Kopfhörer verbindet sich nicht zuverlässig mit dem(neuen) AppleTv 4K. Ich setze den Kopfhörer auf, er verbindet sich, ich habe kurz Sound auf beiden Muscheln, dann nur noch in einer, dann bricht die Verbindung ab…das Spiel wiederholt sich zig mal. Macht er erst seit ein paar Tagen, vorher war alles top. Ein Reset bringt keine Abhilfe. Habe alle Apple Geräte auf dem Neusten Stand, kein Update für den Kopfhörer…
Ich greife dann zu meinen Beats Solo 3 die zuverlässig ihren Dienst verrichten.
Ich verstaue die Kopfhörer immer(!) nach Benutzung in dem mitgelieferten Case, damit sie in den Standby gehen und nicht unnötig der Akku belastet wird. Funktioniert aber nicht! Ich lege den Kopfhörer weg, mit satt Akku Ladung, 1-2 Tage später setze ich ihn auf und der Kopfhörer ist komplett entladen. Er geht viel zu spät in den standby, was auffällt wenn man das ATV einschaltet und die Kopfhörer sich plötzlich unaufgefordert und ungewollt verbinden. Ohne Grund wir der Standby hinausgezögert und schon ist der Akku mal wieder leer. Es kommt noch hinzu das das Gewebe der Ohrpolster etwas rau ist, somit Hautschuppen, und natürlich Schweiß, aufnehmen. Verstaut man die Max nach der Benutzung in dem mitgeliefertem Case, Lüften die Polster nicht ab, sie fangen nach einiger Zeit an wirklich übel zu riechen. Gleiches gilt für das Case. Die Reinigung der Polster ist dann zwingend nötig und leider, aufgrund der Rauheit des Gewebes, nicht so einfach wie man das von anderen Ohrpolstern, mit glatter Oberfläche, gewohnt ist. Meine Empfehlung: Das Case nicht benutzen, Polster Ablüften lassen, oder ohne Polster im Case verstauen !!
Es ist mir in einigen Videos oder Fotos aufgefallen, das sich nach einigen Wochen kleine Falten in den Polster bilden. Das ist bei mir auch der Fall. Das habe ich in der Form noch nie gesehen, und kenne das von meinen anderen Kopfhörern so nicht! Ich habe versucht diese Falten raus zu streichen, funktioniert nicht vollständig. Ein Witz das man sich mit so etwas beschäftigen muss…
Ich kann überhaupt nicht verstehen warum Apple die Kopfhörer nicht abschaltbar macht? Es wäre ein leichtes durch längeres drücken der “crown“ eine Ein/Abschaltung zu ermöglichen. Erspart unnötigen Ärger über entleerte Akkus und ungewollte Verbindungen die den Standby noch weiter hinauszögern.
Es bildet sich Kondenswasser in den Muscheln, obwohl die Teile immer im normal temperierten Wohnzimmer liegen. Der Kopf ist eben wärmer wie das Aluminium der Muscheln, und die erwärmen sich eben nicht, oder nur sehr langsam. Wenn man die Polster mal abnimmt, was löblicherweise super einfach ist, kann man erst mal mit einem Tuch die Muscheln trocknen. Elektronik und Wasser? Das kann nur gut werden. Auch hier würde ich empfehlen: Ablüften lassen, nicht direkt ins Case!
Werde den Support kontaktieren müssen um die Verbindungsprobleme zu beheben, dann sehe ich weiter.
Obwohl ich das Teil klasse finde, vor allem den 3d sound bei Filmen liebe, würde ich diese Kopfhörer nicht empfehlen solange diese Probleme bestehen!
Noch eine „Kleinigkeit“. Es liegt, mal wieder, kein Ladegerät bei…
Nachtrag 12.11.2021:
Mittlerweile hat der Apple Support seit dem 16.10 4(!!) Reparaturaufträge geschrieben, ohne das der Logistikpartener von Apple sich auch nur 1 mal gemeldet hätte. Ein "Softwareproblem" verhindert das die Aufträge weitergeleitet werden. Unfassbar schlecht was Apple hier abliefert. Das schafft vertrauen. Habe den Edelschrott seit 4 Wochen defekt hier rumliegen und Apple ist unfähig, oder unwillig🤔, den Support für ihr unausgereiftes Produkt zu erbringen. Jetzt wird das über den Amazon Support abgewickelt, mal sehen wie das läuft...
Hätte ich heute die Wahl gingen die Max zurück und ich würde mit dem Geld was anderes kaufen...

Great sound - poor implementation

I moved to the AirPods Max having tried them out in Apple store and I was truly impressed by the sound quality- especially as I use Apple Music as my got to streaming service. The lossless and spatial audio options make these really stand apart for sound quality. But it’s elsewhere that these are a let down and really make the asking price questionable. Primarily this is in the random battery life (only made worse in my case by the most recent firmware update in May 2022). In my experience I can get good battery life one day(though nowhere near the advertised 20 hours) - then the next day it just gets wiped out in a matter of hours and is actually worse when in the Apple Max ‘case’ which is supposed to put them in low power mode but, since the recent update, doesn’t. To note: I’ve been in touch with Apple and all they can offer is to wait for another firmware update.

TBH at this price point I can’t recommend these over say the Sony X1000XM4’s (which my wife uses and simply work without flaw). I hope that Apple see fit to give us power off option when they bring out the second iteration of these headphones (and a better case too).

UPDATE AFTER 6 MONTHS
To be honest the audio quality you these in conjunction with Apple’s ecosystem (e.g. Spatial Audio) is superb. And the ANC is probably one of the best. But at this price point these on their own are not enough to recommend these.

I have found over time the design to be problematic. In recent warm summer months, the ear cushions have started to smell presumably from sweat. Even after following the recommended cleaning method the cushions last a couple days use before smelling again. Sure they can be replaced but again at this price point that’s not great. This issue is not present when I wear my wife’s Sony’s because of the plastic/leather covering of the ear pads. I have also had battery problems with mine as outlined above which, fortunately, Apple then replaced for free under warranty. The lack of a power switch or a simpler method of preserving power would be better too.

Then there’s that ‘dumb’ case.

Of course these were Apple’s first attempt at the AirPods Max and hopefully in their next iteration (maybe September?) a lot of these issues will be addressed.

I’d performed numerous listening demos of these headphones at various Apple stores before taking the plunge.

These are beautifully built headphones with simplicity of connection and great comfort to match.

Sound out of the box was generally very good, and I continued to give them the usual run-in period to loosen them up over the course of a few days, which resulted in a more open sound with improved expression, musicality and allowed the bass to become more elastic and extended, thoroughly enjoyable to listen-to. Very accurate and honest sound.

Connectivity was faultless and each of my source units showed a connection each and every time, played with the Digital Crown adjustment, personalised the push button cycle method and was blown away with how good the noise isolation/cancellation and transparency mode worked……….

However, after a lengthy listening session (a complete album) I sensed that the high frequency extension was subtly muted, enough for me to register.

Upon removing the ear pads I discovered my set exhibited the previously reviewed condensation issues, not just behind the ear-pads, but also pooling on the drive-unit itself, thus damping the higher frequencies, the ear-pads themselves remained completely dry.

I allowed the units to dry out over the course of an hour or so, and began to enjoy them again, the extended highs were back and after 30 minutes I took them off and checked if the condensation had returned, and sure enough, there were droplets forming on the driver, totally unacceptable.

This was not sweat or perspiration, I had not done a workout, or a run with them, I was just using them in the lounge, with an ambient temperature of 20-21 degrees.

Given that this is the visible condensation, I hate to think what’s going on In the areas unseen, judging by many reports plastered all over the internet (just a simple search of “Apple AirPods Max Condensation Issue”) I didn’t want to take the chance of the ultimate failure of the headphones, so chose to return them.

Sure, I could’ve purchased Apple Support, but why should I need to? And even then, there’s no guarantee it’ll be covered, as it’ll be seen as water damage, they are not sweatproof.

Units returned for refund. I would’ve so wanted to keep them, as they sounded so honest, controlled, dynamic and tidy in presentation. But I just didn’t want to have to cut short a listening session just to let them ”dry out” , it’s ludicrous.

Sorry Apple, great concept, superb acoustics, however this is one of your worst executed products, your engineering team really need to rethink the design, a cold aluminium sealed housing in close proximity to a warm head, hugging a warm outer ear, really??

Ein Spontankauf war es nicht, vielmehr habe ich lange überlegt, ob ich den doch recht stolzen Preis für diesen Kopfhörer bezahlen soll - zumal ich mit dem bis dahin genutzten Sony WH1000-XM3 nicht schlecht "aufgestellt" war. Da letzterer seine Mucken bekam, habe ich schließlich den Max gekauft - und bin doch recht angetan von diesem Gerät!
Auffällig waren die blitzsaubere Verarbeitung (wie bei all unseren Apfel-Geräten), die wertigen Materialien und das recht hohe Gewicht. Letzteres spürt man aber kaum noch, wenn man den Kopfhörer aufsetzt - das Ding sitzt einfach gut und lässt sich auch über längere Zeit tragen, ohne unbequem zu werden.
NC arbeitet sehr effektiv und lässt sich per Tastendruck leicht aus- und einschalten. Überhaupt ist die Bedienung über die "Digital Crown" neben der erwähnten Taste sehr gut und intuitiv.
Eine App wie bei Sony, wo sich das Klangbild individuell anpassen lässt, gibt es nicht, ist m.E. aber auch nicht erforderlich, da die AirPods Max sehr gut abgestimmt sind.
Die Betriebszeit mit ca. 20 Stunden ist ausreichend, auch wenn sie nicht an die des Sony-Gerätes heranreicht.
Die Anbindung an Apple-Geräte ist perfekt, war/ist bei etlichen anderen Kopfhörern aber auch nicht viel "schlechter".
Potential für Verbesserungen gibt es natürlich auch für dieses Apfel-Teil, so ist mir unverständlich, warum sich dieser Kopfhörer nicht ausschalten lässt. Es wäre doch sicherlich machbar gewesen, das Gerät durch längeres Drücken auf die Taste aus- und wieder einzuschalten.
Eine absolute Zumutung für Nutzer, die den Max auf Reisen u.ä. mitnehmen wollen, ist dieses Ding, was Apple als Case bezeichnet. Dieses an einen BH erinnernde Irgendwas ist eher als Witz denn als Etui zu bezeichnen. Mich tangiert es zwar nicht, weil ich den Kopfhörer nur zu Hause benutze, aber wer mit dem Ding unterwegs sein möchte, wird sich kaum über diesen mangelhaften Schutz seines teuren Kopfhörers freuen - recht sperrig ist das Ganze ohnehin. Da bieten Sony und andere Hersteller deutlich bessere Lösungen.
Sicherlich wäre ein eingearbeitetes Silikonpad o.ä. nützlich gewesen, denn die beiden Alu-Muscheln klackern sehr leicht aneinander und es ist wohl nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis sich entsprechende Stellen unschön bemerkbar machen.
Zusammenfassend meine ich, daß es sich bei den AirPods Max um sehr gute Bluetooth-Kopfhörer handelt, die sich sehr einfach nutzen lassen. Ein paar Schwachstellen könnten ruhig noch behoben werden, um den doch recht stolzen Preis besser zu rechtfertigen...

Nachtrag: Nach ca. einem Monat war plötzlich auffälliges Rauschen im rechten Lautsprecher vernehmbar. Überdies trat mehrmals ein sehr unangenehmes, lautes Geräusch auf, das an eine hochdrehende Bohrmaschine erinnerte. Nutzen konnte ich den Kopfhörer somit nicht mehr. Das Gerät wurde zur Reparatur eingesandt.
Heute erhielt ich den Kopfhörer zurück. Nach einer knappen Stunde Nutzung traten plötzlich wieder die gleichen Probleme auf: erhebliches Rauschen im rechten Lautsprecher, welches schließlich in einem unangenehmen, schon schmerzhaften Störgeräusch endete. Eine Nutzung des Gerätes ist so natürlich nicht möglich.
Obwohl ich ansonsten mit Apple-Geräten sehr zufrieden bin, trifft das hier für den AirPods Max leider in keiner Weise zu!

Ein Ersatzgerät (neu), welches ich erhalten habe, hielt gerade zwei Wochen, bis auch da die gleichen Probleme auftraten. Ich weiß nicht, was die Ursache dieser Fehler ist, aber ich bin von den Airpods Max maßlos entäuscht! Habe dann schließlich einen SonyWH 1000-XM4 gewählt, und der verrichtet einwandfrei seinen "Dienst"...

My main purpose for buying these was to watch tv/movies on my Apple TV.
As it’s an Apple product connecting to an Apple product I believed this would be seamless.
However I noted some audio sync delay in some cases.
Not consistent - one show on Netflix might be fine, another might have audio sync issues.
Tried over different media sources - Prime, Plex - the same.
I did the “calibrate wireless sync” fix but still not consistent.
When it does work, it works really well, but not having the peace of mind that every show will work is annoying, for the price you would expect that this would work 100%.
The WiFi AP the Apple TV connects to is also an Apple Airport device so not a device interoperability issue.
Hopefully something that can be fixed by a software update in future.

Got 6 months Apple Music free for buying these so switched from Spotify to Apple Music.
The sound is really good, can’t fault it.
Not an audiophile so can’t give objective measurements but they do sound great.
Some niggles with Apple Music - some tracks refused to play citing permissions issues, had to log out of Apple Music & log back in for them to play.
Went for a walk, was logged into AM on the PC at home while listening to AM on the iPhone; audio cut out every 5 minutes telling me multiple people were listening to AM & prompting me to upgrade.
Spotify does not have any issues like this, again Apple need to sort out their software.

Using these for music while working from home, they are not compatible with Microsoft Teams. So need to change headset when taking Teams calls. Not their main purpose so fine, but another issue to be aware of before purchasing. Again, something that might be fixed by a software update in future.

They are a bit sore on the head after wearing for over an hour, may take some getting used to.

They are very expensive, saved some money by ordering from Amazon.de instead of Amazon.co.uk, delivery was fast, no problems there.

Summary: their use case is limited, but what they should do really well, they don’t do 100%. Lovely hardware, great sound, but a sometimes poor user experience due to poor software.

Update - change from 3 to 2 stars, sold after 5 months. Extremely sore on the neck after wearing for an hour. I tried to like them, tried to use them whenever I could, but just not worth it. Too many issues with hardware and software. Great sound, but unusable in a real-world context.

Don’t understand what the hype is with these. Underwhelming, unclear sound quality plus super expensive. My Sony MX4s had far better sound quality and were more comfortable than these. I thought I would persevere but after prolonged use, I found that it compressed my head too much and gave me a headache. I usually love Apple products but this one is a no from me.

This was heavily used, smelled of extremely strong perfume that even transferred to wherever it touches. Cleaning didn’t help at all. It is registered to someone else’s Apple ID, (resetting to factory settings will not wipe out). This prevents another Apple ID to register these as their own. The worst of all is that the previous owner can track headphone’s location, which means my location. Amazon has to be obliged to check this before accepting a return as it leaves the product not resell-able/reusable and created privacy breach.

Die Kopfhörer sind nichts für kleine oder normalgroße Köpfe.
Wenn die Kopf wie meiner „normal“ ist. Wirst du die Kopfhörer nicht zum Sport anziehen können. Aber auch beim Sitzen den Kopf zu bewegen ist unangenehm und das Noise Cancelling kann damit nicht richtig arbeiten.

Also nun etwas genauer: die AirPods Max haben die obere Kopfhalterung selbst in der kleinsten Einstellung sehr Hoch. Ich würde nicht sagen, dass mein Kopf besonders klein ist. Ich kenne sowohl Leute mit noch kleineren aber auch Leute mit größeren Köpfen. Daher würde ich mich in Deutschland als Durchschnitt bestrichenen. Trotzdem muss die Kopfhalterung bei mir auf dem aller kleinsten stehen und immernoch sorgt diese für keine Stabilität. Deine AirPods rutschen immer minimal herum. Dadurch reibt sich mein Haut um die Ohren auf. Gleichzeitig sorgt das aber, in Kombination mit einem fehlenden Faltmechanismus, auch dafür, dass noch mehr Platz in der Tasche verloren gehen.

Das nächste Problem ist dann jedoch die Kopfbreite. Auch hier bin ich denke ich wieder im Durchschnitt. Ich habe kein breites Gesicht. Ich bin auch so eher eine schlanke Person. Es gibt jedoch eindeutig dünnere Gesichter. Gerade Frauen sieht man da regelmäßig, dessen Gesichter noch definierter und schmaler sind. Das Problem was jetzt daraus folgt ist, dass man nicht zu 100% alles abgedichtet hat. Es kommt immer irgendwo minimal was durch. Mit der Hand fühlt man das nicht, ist jedoch ANC an, wird das wirklich merklich. Drückt man von der Seite auf die Hörer und sorgt selber für ein enges Anliegen ist selbst im Flugzeug alles stumm. Bewegt man ohne dagegen zu drücken jedoch langsam und leicht seinen Kopf merkt man, wie von irgendwo das Rauschen in die Hörer kommt, die Kopfhörer versuchen das auch wieder irgendwie auszugleichen und alles hört sich ganz seltsam an. Das ist dabei extrem nervig weil es dich komplett herausreißt. Du hörst plötzlich ein Rauschen auf beiden Ohren, das aus unterschiedlichen Richtungen kommt und irgendwie seltsam klingt weil es nicht richtig ausgeglichen wird. Und das bewegt sich in Endlosschleife mit dir aber noch um deine Ohren Herum, wenn du dich nicht konzentrierst deinen Kopf wirklich exakt still und ruhig an einer Stelle zu halten.
Für mich hat das die ganze Erfahrung ruiniert und ich bin auf On ear Kopfhörer von Beats umgestiegen.

I like the headphones, they are comfy mainly because they dont have the annoying fake leather like most. I have alot of headphones and while these are good (the best Ive had as far as build & NC), being better than the bose & sony so far. I would never buy Sony again after poor customer service & sending my headphones back unfixed & being rude. Bose QC35 didnt last long before one earcup hissed. The ipod max are not built as well as the reviews online would suggest in my opinion, not that they are bad I just expected more from the reviews. I have aspergers and have headphones on 24/7 and when I swap to my night headphones soundcore q20 at less than a 10th of the price, which have already lasted over a year it makes me wonder why I paid so much. However the noise cancelling is far better on the apple ones, sound is good but not as good as they would suggest and if they last as long as other apple products Ive had then the rating would go up. However not having an on/off button is starting to drive me crazy, it hinders connecting these & my other headphones. The earcups also turn the opposite way to all other headphones when turning to place in the case. I am currently 50/50 if I would buy again which has dropped since having them.
UPDATE My headphones lasted 10 days before failing they were worn for around 14 hours per day. This of course can be down to luck but I wont be buying again as they are not up to the standard expected. Maybe it was the condensation behind the earcup maybe just poor build.
