It's OK, a tough book to get through.

It's OK, I obviously didn't expect it to be an enjoyable read but it's a tough book to get through.

Although a brand new copy, it is a reprint and the print quality is poor. On some pages the text is faded, on others it's fine and on others there are letters and words that are double printed, darker than the surrounding text.

The physical dimensions are smaller than a regular paperback. When I first received the book I was surprised that it was smaller.

I bought this to replace a book I had given away. People feel they need to explain this world in simple terms and the propagandist manages that need,
So much insight. E.g. it is the well-informed person who keeps up with current events who is most easily propagandised; and the final and most complete purpose of propaganda is to have have a network of people propagandising themselves (this explained 40 years before social media were invented). The examples come from WW2 and the cold war so the book has dated a little. Hence only 4 stars.

This is an excellent book. It shows the subtleties of manipulation--both on the part of the manipulator who creates the propaganda, and especially on the part of those who are manipulated. That is, how the latter must be predisposed to believe the stereotypes/half-lies handed out by the propaganda.

First read of Ellul. I found it easy to read and flowed nicely. Enjoyed the subject matter, is of great interest. Did not pretend to have solutions like many authors but got into the nitty gritty of this and that about propaganda. Not a Doomsayer. No 'answers' just explanations. Have ordered another of his books after finishing this (The Technological Society).

A fascinating book. Written in the early 1960s this book is in no way dated; if anything, it has improved with age.

Jacques Ellul's idea is briefly as follows: modern man living in a technological society needs propaganda in order to survive in an unnatural environment, an environment created by technology, by the Industrial Revolution. But propaganda is dangerous because it destroys the ambiguity, the ability to question one's own beliefs, the tolerance for differing opinions; propaganda destroys all that is at the root of democratic culture. And yet, despite this, modern man craves propaganda for the sense of relief and the sense of belonging that propaganda provides him with. Propaganda is not imposed on individuals, it is simply supplied to willing recipients. The point of all propaganda regardless of the political structure (democratic, totalitarian, etc.) is to enable human beings to function within a technological society. We are given a nice safe set of beliefs that we can embrace like a security blanket and which provides relief from the tensions and anxieties of modern life. The price is our individuality which we in the West so proudly proclaim - the price is democracy itself. Because everything in propaganda is black and white, yes or no, there is no room for the freedom of thought, for uncertainty or for the sense of ambiguity which are all necessary for the functioning of a democratic society. The security blanket of propaganda smothers democracy as it comforts us.

Read this book and think of how polarized politics have become over the last few decades. How citizens have become either party ideologues or have retreated into political passivity. This is not how a democracy is meant to function; a democracy cannot function like this. This is what propaganda does and this is what Ellul's message is.

To fully understand this book, one must first read the Technological Society by the same author. I read Propaganda prior to the Technological Society, and I remember the first 60 pages of Propaganda being like eavesdropping on a conversation that had already been going on for a while.

The level of scholarship demonstrated by Ellul among authors having written about the propaganda phenomenon is second to none. Chomsky is a high school student next to a university professor in comparison. They approach the subject matter differently and both have different concerns. Chomsky is concerned with American manipulation of mass media and the manufacturing of public opinion in that country, hence his 'Manufacturing Consent: the political economy of mass media', whereas Ellul is concerned with Propaganda as a social phenomenon in the broadest sense and the sociological role it occupies in societies and the formation of attitudes & masses. Both authors study the phenomenon differently as well. Chomsky proposes a propagandist model of political economy which he proceeds to demonstrate quantitatively with the use of language: adjectives, tone, bias, framing, frequency, timing etc. Ellul uses a dialectical approach, which is no less rigorous but might leave some readers not totally satisfied in terms of proof; although I would disagree.

Propaganda has completely changed my perspective on society and what it means to live in society today. Jacques Ellul is certainly one of the greatest intellectuals of the 20 century. IMO he will become as influential as Nietzsche, Heidegger, Marx, or Hegel and will be known as such in centuries to come.

This book is not about brainwashing experiments in controlled environments, nor does it contain abstract theories. It is about propaganda in the modern world as a banal component of everyday life. The second most interesting part of the book is the explanation on how propagandists operate. The most fascinating part of the book are the reasons that victims of propaganda, "propagandees", are attracted to propaganda and why they choose to accept and believe it. According to Ellul, everyone is influenced by propaganda; it is impossible to completely avoid being a victim. Furthermore, propaganda a necessary component of the modern world. But one can reduce its negative impact by being aware of how propagandists operate and avoiding situations where one is more vulnerable to its appeal.

One of the best books I've ever read.
