5,0 z 5 gwiazdek Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and think that these speakers provide a lot of bang for one's buck.

I hummed and hawed between these and Microlab's B77 speakers because whilst the Microlabs probably shade the Edifiers on quality of sound, the Edifiers are a bit smaller and around £20 cheaper. In the end, their size won out because I have limited space. It's also nice that they allow for two inputs, which is exactly what I wanted - one from a TV and the other from my PC. You can play both sources simultaneously if you wish, not that I have any need for that.

They replace a pair of bog standard rather plasticky speakers I've had for a long time, and they're MUCH better sounding. I myself don't like very heavy bass and so have set it at minimum. Even so, it's tight and punchy, more than adequate for my rather small room. I have the treble set at near maximum because that happens to suit me -- maybe because I'm no spring chicken. But the good thing is that even at maximum, the treble doesn't become at all tinny.

I also like that they sound good on their side, with the tweeters on the outside left and right, as this creates more clearance above them on the shelf where I have to put them. In fact, I find they sound better that way in my set up than they do upright. There's good separation between instrumental sounds: bass, midrange and treble don't sound muddled. The bass actually plays tunes well, even when there are several going on at the same time, and I can still effortlessly pick out midrange and treble registers.

These speakers certainly get your foot tapping, even though they're not strictly hi-fi. They sound amazingly good for the price and their size. I also find that the grills don't seem to alter the sound much, which is good because I'm always worried about the long-term effect of sunlight on the drivers -- with one set of hi-fi speakers I once had, after a few years the driver surrounds practically rotted away because I never used the grills.

Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and think that these speakers provide a lot of bang for one's buck. Maybe the Microlabs would have been just that bit better, but like I said, it was all a question of size and to a somewhat lesser extent, price. There's a direct comparison of the two on YouTube if you can't decide yourself -- pretty much everyone seems to be agreed that the choice is between the two. If you have the space and the extra £20, maybe the Microlabs would suit you better, but I doubt you'd be disappointed with the Edifiers.

Edit: now I've had them a bit longer, I want to say something else. I don't know why it is, but with these speakers, for the first time I'm HEARING words to songs I never really paid much attention to in the past, always having been someone attracted to tunes more than words. This has formerly been the case, even with true hi-fi speakers. But now, quite without any effort to listen, the words are registering with me, and this is significantly enhancing my audio experience. It's quite uncanny, and I have no idea why it should be so. It's as if they have a weird ability to cause me to HEAR rather than actively try to LISTEN, which I've always had to do in the past. No other speakers have ever achieved this, and it makes them, for me, all the more special.

5,0 z 5 gwiazdek Excellent Budget Amplified Speakers, High Quality For The Price...

You will be hard pressed to find a better amplified speaker at this price, and build quality; I am a retired electronics engineer having worked with audio and radio frequency equipment in commercial and broadcast companies, so I think I recognise a good product in todays world for the domestic market.

The sound quality is very good with a range to cover most of the HI-Fi audio band, you have the option to adjust tonal levels as well, and get two inputs... one AUX line in & one PC computer line in; each have different level signals input, and the only thing to consider is how your going to use it ! Basically the AUX line in, is for a Line level output signal around 550mV = millivolts peak to peak just over half a volt, this means you need a pre-amp if your going to use it for a record-phono reproduction, and with the pre-amp you also need the required RIAA equalisation for records; normally in the designed for record pre-amps will have the RIAA as standard design.

Okay then, other options is a mixer control, either two or more inputs as required; then the output to the amplifier AUX input... by using an amplified mixer with line inputs, your going to have a good 45dB signal increase, especially if a microphone input is on the mixer as well; of course you can just use the amplifier to plug-in your I-Pad or mobile music device ? so using the earphone output socket, you will have more than enough signal to drive the amplifier; this would be the same if you use the PC computer output, into the PC socket.

So if you think about it, you have options to make that connection if you remember the amplifier needs a Line Input Signal; also bear in mind, the PC and AUX inputs are live at the same time, so you either turn off one of the two devices your using at any time, otherwise you will have two music or audio signals mixing at the same time; there is also the basic remote control, this has a very good range even when you don't point it at the master speaker... however for the quality of this speaker system and price, it's a very good compromise.

One negative ? If your thinking of using it for a shortwave radio system monitor speaker, to improve the sound quality; I would warn you not too, the unfortunate fact is that this amplifier has an internal "Switched - mode - Power - Supply" my personal worst enemy when it comes to radio interference... even if you think moving it away from the receiver will resolve this issue, it will-not ! The reason is, that the switching pulses are riding on the screened audio input cables, even a ferrite core or choke will-not stop the interference… so your warned.

However you can try an isolator 1 to 1 transformer, I did-not take this option; so if like myself your an electronics engineer or good hobbyist, with experience of electronics; you just remove the offending power supply and build a Linear - Transformer power supply ? you need to have a 17 Volt regulated DC at 1 Amp current capacity; each audio channel at peak max volume can top 500mA, so a 1 amp supply will cover the power required. Just in case your wondering why the power consumption is low, it's because the power amplifiers are in a bridged configuration, and provide a good audio power drive at low current... good luck and enjoy your purchase.

4,0 z 5 gwiazdek Edifier speaker comparison: R1280DB v R1850DB v S1000DB
Opinia napisana w Wielkiej Brytanii dnia 10 marca 2019
Kolor: Brązowy/CzarnyStyl: Z Bluetooth i wejściami cyfrowymiRodzaj: PojedynczyZweryfikowany zakup
First of all, I have no professional connection to either Edifier or Amazon – I'm just a customer.

This review necessarily involves a comparison of three of Edifier's models (R1280DB, R1850DB and the S1000DB) so I have placed the review in each model's Amazon page.

I hope you like reading – this review is a bit long, but I'm so impressed by the Edifier brand (and Amazon!) that I wanted to do it justice. I hope you will find it useful.

I'm not an industry professional, just someone who is passionate about hi-fi. I'm also a physicist and so I'm fairly technical but I certainly don't claim to be any kind of expert so what you are getting here is simply a layman's opinion - although I'm fussy in the extreme about my music and home cinema!

Part 1: The bedroom - Once upon a time…

I got fed up being awoken by what sounded like a nuclear attack alarm from my phone every morning – I was certainly awake but I wanted to be gently brought into consciousness – not start the day with my heart pounding, thinking that I might cardiac arrest at any second!

So, I bought a top of the range radio alarm at £170. It had three speakers, one of which claimed to be a "subwoofer". I wasn't overly impressed. I like my hi-fi and music, and mistakenly thought this might come close to a hi-fi sound – it did not.

I had an Ocean Digital internet radio (no built-in speaker) lying around and discovered that it had dual alarms built in. I had the idea of being awoken by true hi fi sound in the morning – a bit indulgent, I know, but life is short so why not?

I didn't really want an amplifier, cables and large speakers cluttering up the bedroom, so I thought of active speakers. I had never really considered them before as I thought they produced lower quality sound than passive speakers driven by a separate amplifier. I spent the best part of a day looking at reviews (from articles all over the world) and finally decided to give the Edifier R1280DB active speakers a try, even though I had never even heard of the company before. Given Amazon's outstanding customer service, I knew that I could return them with no fuss if they weren't up to standard.

I bought the wooden finish type and was immediately impressed. They looked good in the bedroom and the sound was excellent, especially considering the price and the size of the speaker (small). My view is that this setup would be very difficult to beat by any of the (even high-end) one piece music systems available. OK, it's a bit indulgent for what is essentially an alarm clock (£120 for the speakers and around £40 for an internet radio) but the sound was superb. It kicked the radio alarm which I had purchased initially completely out of the park!!!

Part 2: The kitchen

Having been so impressed by the R1280DB, I talked myself into getting some speakers to sit beside the TV / satellite in the kitchen. I thought I'd go a bit further up the Edifier range and settled on the R1850DB at £160.

This is where things got a bit more serious – this speaker delivers a true hi-fi quality sound, in my opinion. Obviously, we need to remember two things, namely the price and the size, so it's not going to match a £1,000 set of speakers and separate amplifier – but it's not far off that kind of quality, at least at moderate volumes. My main system is around that price, so I'm judging it against that.

I think Edifier may be victims of their own excellent products here; at a price increase of only £40 (£160 versus £120), in my view there is a substantial jump in sound quality over the R1280DB, so much so that if you can stretch to it, the R1850DB is definitely the one to go for. Considering that you will hopefully be listening to these speakers for years to come, that additional £40 becomes even less significant.

Part 3: Back to the bedroom…

Having been totally blown away by the sound quality of the R1850DB speakers, how easy they were to set up and how tidy and unobtrusive they were, I returned the R1280DB speakers and moved the R1850DBs into the bedroom – I now actually look forward to the "alarm clock" going off in the morning – that's a first! Incidentally, if you are using these as an alarm clock, they need to be left on. I measured their power consumption when there is no input and it is just under 6 watts. By my calculation that is approximately one kWh per week (6 watts x 168 hours) so, if you leave them on 24/7, that should equate to less than 20p per week in additional electricity. Or you could, of course, just turn them on at night and off again in the morning. I have also linked them to a blu-ray player and the TV in the bedroom – they have transformed everything sound-wise! The additional digital connectors are a huge advantage here – see the note further on.

Part 4: Back to the kitchen…

For those of you who haven't gotten tired of me babbling on, you may have worked out that the kitchen is now missing a set of speakers…

I was so impressed by Edifier's R1850DB that I started to look even further up the range. After ANOTHER day looking at reviews, the Edifier S1000DB model appeared to be receiving huge praise from every reviewer. However, at £280 (for Amazon Prime members, otherwise £300) these are not exactly budget speakers, so it took a few days before I talked myself into taking the plunge.

Bottom line, I am hugely impressed with the S1000DB! Again, it is a step up from the R1850DB. However, it doesn't make the R1850DB sound bad in any way by comparison – I can wholeheartedly recommend both of these models. The S1000DB is a gorgeous speaker in terms of its looks, real wood (I believe) finish, and top-notch sound quality. Crystal clear treble, massive and controlled bass, this active speaker is on a par with a much more expensive setup of separate amp and speakers – and much tidier and unobtrusive for smaller spaces. I have it plugged into the TV and a satellite receiver in the kitchen where I can also listen to satellite radio, which is amazing quality sound.

My opinion is that the R1850DB is the optimum price / performance compromise here, but you would not go wrong with whichever of this trio you went for.

A brief summary of 'for' and 'against' each model would be:

Model FOR AGAINST
R1280DB Compact, looks, price Sound is good, but not hi-fi.
R1850DB Optimum price / performance Maybe a bit plain looking
S1000DB Top quality sound, bass, looks Nothing if you have £280

Additionally, with the exception of the S1000DB, the remotes are a bit on the cheap side. Edifier would do well to address this point as it would enhance the perceived quality of the system – after all, it is the only bit of the system that we regularly touch, and that tactile interface is important – to me, at least. I don't know if a universal remote could work here – comments are welcome.

A few final thoughts:

1. Edifier make models with and without digital inputs. The …DB at the end of the model name stands for Digital plus Bluetooth. My recommendation is definitely to go for these additional digital inputs. They add slightly to the cost, but they massively increase the flexibility of the speakers. I have used all of the digital and analogue inputs and they all work flawlessly.

2. I briefly considered the S2000DB, which again won massive praise from all reviewers. Unfortunately, the price difference in the UK between those and the S1000DB was just too much for me. I would dearly love to hear the S2000DB and I will be watching the price carefully, just in case I need speakers for the bathroom…! Watch this space!!!

3. A final mention to Amazon. There were a few very minor snags during this buying spree but Amazon customer service, as always, fixed the problems instantly and without question. Thank you, Amazon! Being able to purchase equipment, which isn't exactly cheap, with total confidence in the seller is a huge plus point for the consumer.

Thanks for "listening"… and good luck if you decide to purchase. I am certain you would not be disappointed with any of these models.

Opinia napisana w Hiszpanii dnia 8 maja 2018
Kolor: Drewno / CzarnyStyl: Bez Bluetooth i wejść cyfrowychRodzaj: PojedynczyZweryfikowany zakup

1,0 z 5 gwiazdek Don’t remember settings
Opinia napisana w Wielkiej Brytanii dnia 25 stycznia 2019

Waste of money.

Speakers don’t remember treble, bass and volume(!) settings once wake up from standby.

If you like to adjust bass or treble you have to go to speakers and do it each time (bass and treble can’t be adjusted by remote).

Coming back to default volume after sleep is super annoying during night time as default volume is quite loud.

Problem is known for over 1 year. Nothing was done about it during hardware revisions.

Shame as they sound nice.

I decided to go Back2Black after a 25+ years seperation, I picked up a Dual 506 (1981) Turntable in mint condition and needed some active speakers, reading a few reviews and watching a few YT videos I went for these speakers, hooking them up via a pre-amp, so for £120 what do you get, well firstly they are really well made and look great i have removed the grills, the sound? i was quite suprised at how good it was, tweaking the bass and trebble nobs to suit the music and they pack a little punch you could feel the air pumping out the air vent, at full volume they hold out very well indeed, not overpowering, perfect volume for a terraced house living room, and not to loud for the neighbours lol, I have started collecting vinyl again and wow it really is the best way for music to be played, pumping out U2 Joshua Tree Live @ Madison Square Garden, Depeche Mode Live @ The Rose Bowl, really did turn back the years for me to my Vinyl collecting teenager days, then with these speakers there is the added bonus of hooking up all your devices via the bluetooth, there is an optical port, 2 x line inputs, coaxil port, the remote works great, so if you are looking for real value for money, and better than price sound from a well made speaker then look no further than a pair of these they wont dissapoint

4,0 z 5 gwiazdek Edifier Studio R1280T 2.0 vs. PreSonus ERISE3.5
Opinia napisana w Niemczech dnia 7 września 2020
Kolor: BiałyStyl: Bez wejść Bluetooth i cyfrowychRodzaj: PojedynczyZweryfikowany zakup
