From the prizewinning journalist and internationally recognized expert on corruption in government networks throughout the world comes a major work that looks homeward to America, exploring the insidious, dangerous networks of corruption of our past, present, and precarious future. "If you want to save America, this might just be the most important book to read now. --Nancy MacLean, author of Democracy in Chains Sarah Chayes writes in her new book, that the United States is showing signs similar to some of the most corrupt countries in the world. Corruption, she argues, is an operating system of sophisticated networks in which government officials, key private-sector interests, and out-and-out criminals interweave. Their main objective: not to serve the public but to maximize returns for network members. In this unflinching exploration of corruption in America, Chayes exposes how corruption has thrived within our borders, from the titans of America's Gilded Age (Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, J. P. Morgan, et al.) to the collapse of the stock market in 1929, the Great Depression, and FDR's New Deal; from Joe Kennedy's years of banking, bootlegging, machine politics, and pursuit of infinite wealth to the deregulation of the Reagan Revolution--undermining this nation's proud middle class and union members. She then brings us up to the present as she shines a light on the Clinton policies of political favors and personal enrichment and documents Trump's hydra-headed network of corruption, which aimed to systematically undo the Constitution and our laws. Ultimately and most importantly, Chayes reveals how corrupt systems are organized, how they enable bad actors to bend the rules so their crimes are covered legally, how they overtly determine the shape of our government, and how they affect all levels of society, especially when the corruption is overlooked and downplayed by the rich and well-educated.

Both right and left revile 'the swamp, ' but Sarah Chayes is the first to provide a compelling--to say nothing of brave--account of how sophisticated self-dealing networks of every stripe are rigging the rules and poisoning our politics. If you want to save America, this might just be the most important book to read now. --Nancy MacLean, author of Democracy in Chains I can't imagine a more important book for our time. --Sebastian Junger Required reading. --Tom Friedman Compelling, fascinating . . . a call to action.--The Huffington Post
Sarah Chayes's unique trajectory has led from reporting on Europe, North Africa, and the fall of the Taliban in 2001 as National Public Radio's Paris correspondent to a decade on the ground in Afghanistan, including service to two commanders of the international forces there and to former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen. Internationally renowned for her innovative thinking on corruption and its implications, Chayes has probed its workings on five continents--and most recently the United States. She is the author of The Punishment of Virtue: Inside Afghanistan After the Taliban; Thieves of State: Why Corruption Threatens Global Security, a 2016 LA Times Book Prize winner; and On Corruption in America: And What Is at Stake. She lives in Paw Paw, West Virginia.

Wake Up Americans!Opinia napisana w Kanadzie dnia 8 grudnia 2020
A well-written book exploring America for hints of kleptocracy of the sort that is found in Russia, Turkey and other emerging nations. The US in fact seems to be the grand-daddy of them all, passing legislation and legal verdicts that essentially legalize what used to be grand white collar crimes crimes. Through various networks made up of politicians, judges, billionaires and media channels, everyone is being paid off and eating at the same trough of taxpayer funds. We have moved from an ethos of redistribution of tax dollars to the neediest poor to the kleptocrats at the top as democracy is failing globally. A timely, alarming engaging book.
Sarah Chayse is an American hero for her clarity in identifying how our ideals are undermined.Opinia napisana w Stanach Zjednoczonych dnia 6 września 2021
Sarah Chayse’s honesty and clarity are national treasures. Thankfully, some in government have paid close attention and given her a platform. Our democracy can be strongly advanced by those who appreciate her warnings.

Must Reading for Every AmericanOpinia napisana w Stanach Zjednoczonych dnia 28 października 2021
The authoress knows her material well and presents a first class analysis of how deep and wide the corruption is in the United States. Until our people realize how corrupt their representatives are, the corruption will only fester and get worse. Corruption in America unlike that in the third world is hidden in the halls and offices of every level of government, and corporate head quarters.

Shows how widespread and dangerous the well known revolving door of industry personnel into government and government personnel into industry is. Also shows there is systemic danger to our democracy from this cabal.
