Apollonius Rhodius's Argonautica, composed in the 3rd century BCE, is the epic retelling of Jason's quest for the golden fleece. Along with his contemporaries Callimachus and Theocritus, Apollonius refashioned Greek poetry to meet the interests and aesthetics of a Hellenistic audience, especially that of Alexandria in the Ptolemaic period following Alexander's death. In this carefully crafted work of 5,835 hexameter verses in four books, the author draws on the preceding literary traditions of epic (Homer), lyric (Pindar), and tragedy (especially Euripides) but creates an innovative and complex narrative that includes geography, religion, ethnography, mythology, adventure, exploration, human psychology, and, most of all, the coming of age and love affair of Jason and Medea. It greatly influenced Roman authors such as Catullus, Virgil, and Ovid, and was imitated by Valerius Flaccus.

This new edition of the first volume in the Loeb Classical Library offers a fresh translation and improved text.

Race’s edition of the Argonautica is excellent. The translation is literal enough to help students of Apollonius’ difficult Greek, but not to the extent that the English seems forced or unnatural. In instances where the English construction needs to be altered for the sake of style and readability, a more literal translation is offered in the footnotes.

People complaining about the diacritical marks... I’ve no idea what they are talking about. Perhaps they bought the older edition? Mine, at any rate, is well worth the $28.

The author / translator of this Loeb volume provides an excellent translation to this classic epic. Throughout this book, he produces notes for the reader to indicate any other interpretations or meanings behind various verses. And like any other Loeb publication, the original Greek text is provided for reference. Alongside the Argonautica, this volume ends with assorted fragments of texts credited to Apollonius Rhodius making this a very nice and almost complete collection.

Great Scholarship, Poor Value for the Money

I had heard about the Loeb Classical Library for a long time and was interested in possibly collecting the series. But should you have the same inclination, be clear that you're paying a king's ransom for the scholarship that went into the series. This book is, like all the books in the series, tiny. It measures 6.5" x 4.5"--essentially pocket book size. It's a beefy 511 pages, which is less impressive when you realize that the format of these books is to present the original Greek on one side and the translated English on the facing page. And there is a big index. The text itself is interesting if you're into the true classics, which I personally find engaging. But if you're not a fan of the academic, this isn't for you and it isn't a great value in any case.
