Ridley Scott's 1979 film 'Alien' is a classic in every sense of the word and has spawned multiple sequels, spin-offs, merchandise etc. To celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the franchise, we have the paperback re-issue of Alan Dean Foster's novelisation of the first film. This is an adaptation that stays very close to the original film, but that isn't afraid to make a few changes here and there to give it its own unique spin. For example, the stasis chambers the Nostromo crew wake up from at the beginning are clearly very different to those from the original film, and one change I particularly liked was learning what the alien does to the people it takes - it may not kill them all in this version, but the alternative is just as disturbing. Alan Dean Foster's writing style, while initially coming across as quite wordy, is something that gradually grew on me and there's a lot of detail and description packed in these pages, even going as far as having a couple of moments told through Jones the Cat's point of view.
However, one thing I wasn't too keen on here was the pacing. A lot of focus is put on the Nostromo's arrival on the planet and the crew discovering the alien ship, as well as the alien itself. This section is superbly written and dripping with suspense, but by the time the alien has hatched and grown to full size, its killing of each crew member one by one (basically the last act of the original film) becomes a mad, hectic rush. It's as though the writer had been writing at a good and steady pace, but suddenly realized they had to keep it under three-hundred pages and had to rush the rest of the film's events through. But apart from that, there's little else wrong with this otherwise-brilliant adaptation of the film, and if you love the 1979 classic as much as I do, then it's worth giving it a read.
